Redness From Rosacea

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder typically causing the patient to have redness, as well as pimples like lesions, on the cheeks, forehead, chin or nose. There is a tendency for patients to flush easily in the beginning and the condition may even be mild. Overtime, patients may start to develop persistent redness in the center of the face and it can gradually become worse without treatment. Rosacea rarely resolves on its own and may last for years.

Diagnosis and Treatments

  • How to recognize Rosacea?

The pimple-like lesions of rosacea commonly appear as small, red bumps on the face and some may contain pus. Many tiny blood vessels also develop on the skin that contributes to the redness (vascular) component. The white and blackheads that are associated with common acne are conspicuously absent. In fact, the absence of white and blackheads is used to differentiate rosacea from acne.

  • Who is at risk for Rosacea?

Rosacea usually develops over a long period of time and it may affect men or women of any age and even children. For some unknown reason, women get rosacea more often than men, and some are associated with menopause.

  • What treatments can we use to treat Rosacea?

Many people with rosacea are unfamiliar with it and do not recognize it in its early stages. Consulting a dermatologist and identifying the disease is the first step to controlling it. Lifestyle modification to avoid known trigger is important. Dr. Wong recommends a combination of treatments for effective control of the redness and the pimple-like outbreak. The common treatment includes topical gels/creams and oral medications.

However, the redness (vascular) component of the rosacea e.g. facial redness, flushing, fine blood vessels do not respond well to the above mentioned treatment. Stellar M22 OPT (Optima IPL) or VBeam treatment has to be carried out to reduce the redness/blood vessels and many patients have benefitted from this combination approach.

Do's And Don’ts For Rosacea Patients

  • Exercise in a cool environment.

  • Avoid irritating cosmetics and facial products.

  • Avoid hot drinks, spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol. It’s important to note that although alcohol may worsen a case of rosacea, symptoms may be just as severe in someone who doesn’t drink at all.

  • Practice good sun protection. Limit exposure to sunlight, wear hats and use broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF of 15 or higher.

  • Keep a diary of flushing episodes and note if there is any association with the following: e.g. curry, spicy food, beverages with stimulants; products, activities, medications or other triggering factors.
