Skin Cancer Screening in Singapore

Skin Cancers

The three most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. If you must suffer from a type of skin cancer, always pick BCC and not melanoma. BCC is usually just locally aggressive and can be cured easily if treated early with surgery. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and is the leading cause of death from all skin diseases combined.

Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancers are easily curable with surgery when detected early. Hence, it is worthwhile to have skin cancer screening (aka full body mole check). In a skin cancer screening, every patient will be risk stratified according to his / her skin type, nationality, medical history, family history, occupation and recreational sun exposure history.

An experienced dermatologist will scrutinize and examine nearly every inch of your skin barring some private and sensitive area. Demoscopy will be used and is an invaluable tool to assist the dermatologist to look for the finer details of skin cancer and improve the accuracy of his clinical diagnosis.

Indications for Skin Cancer Screening in Singapore

Regular skin cancer screening may be recommended in various circumstances to help maintain skin health and detect potential problems early.

  • Family history of skin cancer

Individuals with close relatives who have had melanoma or other skin cancers may benefit from regular screening due to increased genetic risk factors.

  • Personal history of skin cancer

Those who have previously been diagnosed with any form of skin cancer require ongoing monitoring to detect new or recurring lesions.

  • High sun exposure

People with occupations or lifestyles involving significant sun exposure, including outdoor workers and frequent travellers to sunny climates, may need regular screening.

  • Multiple or unusual moles

People with numerous moles, particularly those with irregular shapes, varied colours, or changing characteristics, may require professional monitoring.

Techniques Used in Skin Cancer Screening

Dermatologists utilise a combination of clinical experience and technology to examine the skin thoroughly during a screening. These include:

Visual inspection

Using magnification and lighting to assess the skin’s surface.

Dermoscopy

A specialised tool that allows for deeper evaluation of moles and lesions.

Mole mapping

Involves photographing all the moles on the body, recording them in a computer, and tracking their progress over time using serial comparison and digital charts. This method is typically available at established skin cancer centres worldwide.

Biopsy referral

If a suspicious lesion is found and requires further histological analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is skin cancer screening in Singapore painful or invasive?

No. Skin cancer screening is non-invasive and generally painless. It involves a detailed visual examination, and if needed, a biopsy may be performed under local anaesthetic.

Do I need a skin cancer screening if I’ve never had skin issues?

Yes. Even without prior skin concerns, individuals may still develop skin cancers due to sun exposure or genetic predisposition. Regular screening helps detect early signs before symptoms appear.

How often should I go for skin cancer screening in Singapore?

For most individuals, screening every one to two years is sufficient. However, high-risk patients such as those with a personal or family history of skin cancer are advised to undergo annual skin cancer screening in Singapore.
