Hives Treatment in Singapore

Are there different types of Hives?

There are 2 main types of urticaria:

  • Acute urticaria is hives lasting less than 6 weeks and is usually triggered by drugs, food, viral infection, insect bites and contact irritants.
  • Chronic urticaria is hives lasting longer than 6 weeks and the cause is usually more difficult to identify. According to published data, 80% of chronic urticaria have no known cause.

Am I Allergic To Something? What Test Must I Do?

Your Singapore dermatologist will go through your medical history and examine you clinically to help establish the diagnosis. He will plan and organize the relevant allergy test when needed. A skin biopsy may also be needed to help confirm or rule out suspected conditions.

Indications for Hives Treatment Singapore

Hives treatment may be recommended when the condition significantly impacts your daily life or health.

  • Acute hives lasting more than 24 hours: Sudden onset hives that persist beyond a day often require medical attention to prevent worsening symptoms.
  • Chronic hives present for six weeks or longer: Long-term hives require specialised assessment to identify underlying causes and develop a comprehensive management plan. Dermatologists can help distinguish between different types of chronic urticaria and tailor treatment accordingly.
  • Severe itching affecting sleep or daily activities: When hives cause intense discomfort that disrupts your rest or ability to work and socialise, medical treatment becomes necessary.
  • Recurrent episodes without clear triggers: Repeated hives outbreaks that occur without obvious causes warrant professional evaluation to identify potential food, environmental, or medication triggers.
  • Hives accompanied by swelling of face, lips, or throat: Swelling in these areas may indicate angioedema, which can be serious and requires immediate medical attention.
  • Inadequate response to standard antihistamines: When first-line treatments like antihistamines provide insufficient relief, specialised dermatological intervention becomes necessary. Higher-dose antihistamines or alternative medications may be required.

Benefits of Hives Treatment

Proper hives treatment offers numerous advantages that can significantly improve your quality of life and prevent complications.

  • Rapid symptom relief

Professional treatment typically provides faster and more complete resolution of itching and skin welts compared to self-treatment. Dermatologists can prescribe stronger medications that work more quickly than over-the-counter alternatives.

  • Prevention of chronic progression

Early and appropriate treatment can help prevent acute hives from developing into a chronic condition that persists for months or years. Timely intervention often leads to better long-term outcomes.

  • Identification of triggers

Comprehensive evaluation helps identify specific substances or situations that trigger your hives, allowing you to avoid future episodes. This knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions about diet, medications, and environmental exposures.

  • Improved sleep quality

Treatment reduces nighttime itching and discomfort, allowing for better rest and recovery. Quality sleep supports your immune system and overall healing process.

  • Reduced risk of secondary skin infections

Proper treatment minimises scratching and subsequent skin damage that can lead to bacterial infections. Dermatologists can also provide guidance on appropriate skin care during treatment.

  • Personalised long-term management plan

Professional care includes developing an individualised strategy for managing future episodes, including emergency medications when needed.

How to treat Hives and can it be cured?

  • When an allergy reaction is confirmed, the treatment is avoidance!

Dr Wong will use antihistamine to treat your urticaria symptomatically so that your quality of life can improve. Acute urticaria will usually subside and be cured once the allergy is identified and avoided. Chronic urticarial is more challenging and requires long and continual treatment. In some difficult cases, specialized medications e.g. Cyclosporin, Dapsone, Xolaire will have to be used to ease the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Should I avoid certain foods while treating hives?

Only avoid foods confirmed as triggers by your dermatologist or if you notice consistent patterns. Unnecessary restrictions may cause nutritional issues without benefit.

What should I do if my hives suddenly worsen?

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe hives that do not respond to prescribed medication.

Will hives leave permanent marks?

Hives typically do not scar. However, scratching can cause temporary dark marks. Proper treatment and avoiding irritation help prevent skin discolouration.

Can I take other medications during hives treatment?

Inform your dermatologist about any new medications, supplements, or over-the-counter products. Some may interfere with your treatment or trigger hives.
