Fillers Injection

Fillers are soft injectable products used to rejuvenate facial skin. They are designed to effectively and temporarily reduce skin wrinkles, replace/restore skin volume, and to revitalize skin.

According to Dr Wong Soon Tee, an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the National University of Singapore, Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the most commonly used and HA has an enormous ability to bind water and is highly viscous. The HA used is specifically formulated to act like your body’s own naturally produced Hyaluronic Acid, helping to instantly reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, restore fullness to the skin, and giving the face a natural and softer look. For example, HA fillers can be injected into sunken cheeks for fuller facial contours, fill out the pre-jowl areas to improve irregular jawlines, smooth out hollows under the eyes or tear trough for fresher looking eyes, and making the nose more attractive by straightening out or to increase the height of the nose. HA fillers also have hydrating and collagen stimulating activity. All the HA injected into the skin are eventually broken down by the body naturally.

What is a Typical Treatment like?

A consultation is necessary for Dr Wong to discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis for you. He will then recommend the appropriate treatment areas for you.

Before the injection, you will be rested in a treatment room for 45 minutes after the application of numbing cream on the desired treatment area. Sometimes local anaesthesia is administered for more sensitive skin.

Dr Wong will either use a fine needle or a blunt cannula to fill in the desired treatment area such as smile lines and cheeks.  The blunt cannula is often used for patient comfort and safety and only 1-2 injection entry points are required for most fillers injection.

The whole treatment takes about 15-45 minutes to complete depending on the area of treatment. The results can be seen immediately. The discomfort is minimal when numbing is properly administered. Even fillers injection of the lips can be completely pain-free.

When necessary, an ice pack or cold towel may be administered on the area to reduce the minor discomfort. You can apply makeup immediately after the treatment and resume normal activities.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects are related to injections site reaction such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling, bumps, bruising, itching, and discolouration. Most of these side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less).

Who is not suitable for Fillers Injection?

During your consultation, you are advised to discuss your medical history with Dr Wong so that he could decide on your suitability for this treatment. You should not undergo fillers injection if you

  • have allergies to lidocaine or the proteins used to make hyaluronic acid
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have recently used drugs that thin the blood or prevent clotting or taking immunosuppressive drugs
  • have bleeding disorders

What kind of results can I expect with Fillers?

The correction and improvement of the area treated is durable but not permanent. The results may last up to one year before it wears off gradually. Subsequently, repeat injections can be arranged every 8 to 12 months. If you discontinue the fillers injection, your appearance will not be any worse, as it will just gradually revert back to your original condition.

Other non-HA fillers

  • Calcium Hydroxyapatite Filler/Radiesse

This stimulating filler is made up of Calcium Hydroxyapatite microspheres and gel. It is an injectable dermal filler that temporarily adds volume to help smooth facial wrinkles and gives an immediate lifting and firming effect on the skin to diminish the signs of ageing. Both the gel and the microspheres are completely broken down by the body over time.

In addition to an immediate filling effect, this filler stimulates the skin’s natural collagen production and help the skin regains its youthful tightness and elasticity. The effects may last for a year or more.

  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid Filler/Sculptra

Another stimulating injectable filler is made up of Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), which replaces lost collagen in the skin and stimulate its own collagen production. When injected into the areas where there is volume loss, it helps to lift and smooth out skin, correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles that appear with ageing. Full treatment with PLLA filler, an average of three injection sessions over a few months, can last more than two years. The overall effect is a youthful appearance with gradual improvement and natural looking results.
