Anti-Wrinkle Injection

What is Anti-Wrinkle Injection?

Anti-wrinkle injection is a non-surgical procedure that involves using a very fine needle and injecting Botulinum Toxin into selected facial muscles. It has been used as an anti-ageing aesthetic treatment since the 1980s and is now the most popular aesthetic treatment for the removal of wrinkles all over the world.

 What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum Toxin is actually a highly purified natural protein derived from bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. It has the ability to relax the muscle that causes wrinkle, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Currently, there are quite a few types of Botulinum Toxin in use by dermatologists all over the world. In Singapore, there are only 3 types of Botulinum Toxin approved by HSA for clinical use. They are Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum Toxin’s main use is for dynamic wrinkles caused by underlying muscle movements.

The muscles of the face are responsible for our expressions, but over time, these expressions leave their marks—frown lines and crow’s feet are good examples. Injecting a small quantity of Botulinum Toxin protein into the facial muscle can cause the treated muscle to relax. With the temporary relaxation in muscle activity, you will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your expression wrinkles over the next 4 to 5 days.

The treatment only relaxes the treated muscle, so the untreated muscles still work normally. There will be no change to your facial features and you can still smile, appear surprised and animate. It is the lines that disappear, not your expressions. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will continue to have a normal feeling in the treated areas.

The results are natural, real and noticeable. They last up to 4 or 5 months until the relaxation effects wear off and the muscle is active again. To maintain the effect, you will need to repeat the injections again. With regular treatments, the wrinkles often appear less severe over time because the muscles are being relaxed and the overlying skin is well rested and not creased at all.

What is a typical treatment like?

A consultation is necessary for Dr Wong to discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis for you. He will then determine the appropriate treatment areas and the amount of Botulinum Toxin required.

The actual injection process takes about 10 minutes. Dr Wong may use a cold pack to numb the treatment area or he may even apply a topical numbing cream before the injection if you are scared of the needle. There is minimal downtime or recovery. It’s often called a lunchtime procedure and you’ll be able to return to your normal routine immediately after you leave the clinic.

Are there any possible side effects with Anti-Wrinkle Injection?

The most common side effects are minor bruising at the injected areas and the bruising usually disappears after a few days. The other side effects are drooping of eyelids (due to inappropriate placement of the injection) and asymmetry. The good thing is that these side effects are minimal and temporary.

Am I a good candidate for Anti-Wrinkle Injection?

Any man or woman under 65 seeking improvement in their facial expression wrinkles is a good candidate, with the exception of the following:

  • You have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves
  • You have allergies to any Botulinum Toxin
  • You have a breathing problem (such as asthma or emphysema), swallowing problems or bleeding problems
  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or if you are nursing or plan to nurse

  Common Myths about Anti-Wrinkle Injection

  •  Myth #1: Anti-Wrinkle Injection is very painful

The truth is that the pain is minimal and the needle used is a very fine needle. Most people compare the sensation of the injection to a mosquito bite. There is a slight pinching feeling but it only lasts for a few seconds.

  • Myth #2: Facial wrinkles will become worst when the Botulinum Toxin wears off.

No, your wrinkles will simply return to their pre-treatment state. They won’t look any worse. You can do a self-test by having your photos taken of the treated area “before” your treatment, and then comparing them to photos taken once the Botulinum Toxin wears off.

In fact, with regular treatments and extended period of muscle relaxation, the wrinkles often appear less severe over time. Even after discontinuing the treatment, the well-rested skin and wrinkles are often better than before your first treatment.

  • Myth #3: Anti-Wrinkle Injection will create an expressionless and frozen face

The frozen look was not uncommon in the past when doctor and patient alike were overzealous in their pursuit of wrinkle eradication.  When the injection is properly administered these days, you should be able to display the entire range of facial expressions including smiling and appearing surprised. It will give a very natural and satisfactory result in nearly 99% of the time. Most patients are happy and will always return for more treatment knowing that this treatment always works! Anti-Wrinkle Injection has been extremely popular throughout the years with more and more people using it to regain a youthful appearance. It can help to ease wrinkles around the eyes and forehead safely, quickly and with minimal pain.
